Field notes
Our field-notes method connects business objectives, available data and direct operational observation. It is designed to leave the client with an explainable decision and a way to test whether it is working.
Frame the decision
We define the choice to be made, the operating boundary, the decision owner, the required service outcome and the date by which the recommendation must become usable. This prevents a broad data exercise from replacing the actual business question.
Build an evidence base
Available orders, routes, volumes, time stamps, capacity information, costs and service exceptions are reviewed for coverage and reliability. Missing or inconsistent data is documented, and representative samples are agreed where a complete history is not available.
Observe the work
Interviews and field observation test how planning rules behave at dispatch, receiving, picking, staging or loading. We distinguish an isolated event from a repeated operating condition and record the constraint that staff are actually managing.
Develop and test options
Alternatives are compared against the same demand, service and resource assumptions. Sensitivity ranges show where a proposal remains useful and where a change in volume, labour, access or customer promise requires another decision.
Hand over an operating recommendation
The final pack explains the preferred option, supporting evidence, implementation sequence, owner for each action and measures to review after launch. Open assumptions remain visible instead of being hidden behind a single forecast.
